Morning Clouds vs. the Moon

Work up this morning to brilliant light coming from the north west, found the sun rise reflecting brightly off the top of rain clouds over Oceanside Beach. Drizzly gray rain from beneath and above – a bright half moon reluctant go to bed and leave the happy blue place behind.

I stopped at the Mt Shasta vista and was treated to the gentle light show spring clouds and sun cast on the hills nearby. This is one of my favorite valleys in the world.

I took this shot of Three Arch Rocks off the patio at the community center as the tide edged back from minus two feet on Oceanside Beach. The blue green of the water was a welcome sight after so many gray days.

Early Spring Sunrise on Willamette River

The sun rose over the Willamette River on this spring morning just south of downtown Portland, illuminating fishermen already quetly finding their spot on the water.

D.C. Casts a Spell

I returned to Washington D.C. again at the end of February, participating in a conference over the weekend which culminated in record “mega storm” weather. Monday morning was like cross-country skiing but it was lovely (if not cold) to look at. The line of dedicated souls pictured here is queuing up in front of the US Supreme court, in blowing snow.

Inauguration Day

I joined a couple of million of my newest friends in Washington D.C. this past week, fortunate to have been invited to join the inauguration ceremony and to be present to hear our new President Barack Obama and others speak on that historic day. The crowd was the happiest one I’ve ever had the privilege of sharing a 15 degree day out of doors and was a trip I will not soon forget.

The Rocks in Winter

The Three Arch Rocks are some of the most photographed monoliths around. I see them most every day at home in Oceanside and never tire of the different characteristic they take on during the course of the seasons.

With a rare snow and exceptional cold, the beach was irresistible to visit at daybreak. As surreal as this looks, this shot is not “photoshopped”. The light was intense and brilliant as it poured from beneath heavy clouds and flooded the rocks with light while the beach remained dark and snowy.

Pacific City Blue

I tagged along on a warm blue afternoon to Pacific City while Steve and our friend Bryce surfed. Oceanside was big and messy.

We suspect this shot is Bryce. He was one of several tall, slender guys on a white surf board wearing an all black wet suit including booties and a hat surfing in strong off-shore winds. (The surfer obscured by white spray at the top of the breaking wave was not discovered until we got back to the dark room.) I only had my camera and one lens so wasn’t well-equipped but the point of the day was the sun, so success was declared, followed by good pub food at the Pelican.

I ran across this photo of my favorite surfer this evening. I love the long, intense, light-saturating rays of the day’s end light in the fall. The sharp contrasts of the stark black wet suit in front of the misty shapes of the Netarts Spit and Cape Lookout make for one of my favorite photos, taken just before we found our home in Oceanside.
